Decades of turntable engineering have informed the design of the Michell TecnoDec. Unlike the majority of turntables, Michell uses an inverted main bearing, with the point of rotation at the top rather than the bottom. With this design, oil is drawn from the base of the bearing up to the thrust ball at the top. This keeps the bearing fully lubricated as the platter spins, avoiding unwanted resonances from this rotation. The motor housing is machined from a solid billet of aircraft-grade aluminium and sits completely free from the main turntable, with the only point of contact being the belt itself. This minimizes the transfer of minute vibrations from the motor’s rotation. Unwanted vibrations are further dampened in the platter material, and external vibrations are minimized by the sorbothane feet. Every aspect of the design aims to allow the chosen tonearm and cartridge to work free of extraneous resonances which would mask fine detail in the music.
