Michell Engineering was founded by John Michell in 1966. An engineer, John’s company began as a manufacturer of parts for other turntable companies. Michell also built scale models and after meeting Stanley Kubrick, John was hired to build the space ship Discover for Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. In addition to manufacturing turntable parts, Michell developed his relationship with multiple film studios and made models for films including Star Wars.

In 1977, Michell released their own turntable design, the Michell Reference Electronic. In the same year the company released another invention of John’s: the record clamp, which has since been adopted by scores of other turntable manufacturers. The 80’s brought the legendary Gyrodec, and in the 90’s came the Orbe. In between, Michell continued to advance the state of turntable design with their advanced power supplies.

In 2003 John Michell passed away. His family picked up the torch of Michell Engineering and today continue the firm’s development of musically engaging turntables founded on solid engineering principles.
