In being so ambitious with this record player’s engineering, Rega has pushed the boundaries of performance at this level and has given premium rivals positioned above it plenty to worry about. Highly recommended.

In Depth

Close-up detail of the foam core plinth on the Rega Planar 8 premium turntable.

Skeletal Plinth

In order to minimise mass, the Rega Planar 8 features an ultra-lightweight skeletal foam core plinth. This design provides the support required for the tonearm and main bearing while also minimising unwanted resonance. The rigidity of the plinth is enhanced with Rega’s dual brace technology. The design is an engineering masterclass designed to extract every nuance deep within the grooves.

Flywheel Platter

The glass platter of the Rega Planar 8 is made from three layers of glass, with the weight concentrated around the outer edge. This turns the platter into a super flywheel, its momentum eliminating any minor speed variations that come as a result of the needle tracing the groove. The rotation of the motor is transferred to the platter via two EBLT drive belts.

External Power Supply

In order to provide the cleanest power to the 24V low-noise motor, the Rega Planar 8 includes the Neo PSU (power supply unit) that also allows for easy speed control with the touch of a button. Each Neo PSU is tuned to its specific motor for the most accurate result.

Creative Audio Pro Tips

  • The Rega Planar 8 will sound great right out of the box, but it will sound even better after 25-50 hours of use, when the cartridge has had a chance to break in.

  • Before playing, you should always remove any surface dust from the record using a quality anti-static carbon fibre record brush.
