The Creative Audio Review

Before the music plays, you will have preconceived notions about the sound of the Focal Maestro Utopia Evo because of its size. Of course, given the price you would be right to expect an other-worldly performance and that is exactly what the Maestro Utopia Evo delivers. We think you’ll be surprised, however, at the sheer delicacy of its presentation. On our first listen, we actually found the output of the dual 11” W cone woofers to be somewhat…reserved. Once we got some hours on them and they loosened up, their impact definitely made us sit up and take notice. When we say impact, we don’t just mean physical impact (though they can definitely hit you hard), but rather how they make you realize just what you’ve been missing with lesser speakers. When describing the character of speakers we will often refer to resolution in the midrange and high frequencies, but with the Maestro Utopia Evos it becomes evident that there is an incredible amount of fine detail in the lower registers as well. These Focals are a sheer delight to listen to at low volume levels, even if your inclination is to crank them up to hear them jam.

Now, when you do turn them up for the first time, you may just have to re-learn everything you thought you knew about high-end audio, because the Focal Maestro Utopia Evo truly does re-write the rule book. Normally we would consider an important characteristic of any high-end speaker is the ability to seamlessly blend the high, mid, and low frequencies together into a cohesive whole. The Focals do this so incredibly well it is practically impossible to hear the join between all the drivers. This has a startling and dramatic effect…before long you will find yourself no longer listening to a speaker, but instead just the music. Until you’ve experienced this, it can be difficult to describe. Something else that may strike you when you turn up the volume is that these speakers never sound loud. Rather turning up the volume simply makes them sound larger. The longer you listen, the longer you realize that these speakers are called Utopia for a reason.

Power Flower

This unique magnet technology delivers a number of key advantages to Focal’s high-end speaker designs. The array of double stacked ferrite rings in a circular open pattern distributed around the voice coil creates an extremely powerful magnetic field. This creates a highly efficient bass driver. In addition there is the added benefit of built-in cooling thanks to the free circulation of air around the magnet stacks. Interestingly, the harder the woofer works, the more air is forced through these open vents and thus the greater the cooling effect. Yet another advantage is the reduction of mechanical compression; the open nature of the design means there is no trapped air and this allows the cone to move freely, enhancing the speed and dynamics inherent in this unique magnet technology.

Pure Beryllium

A rare and precious metal, Beryllium’s incredible rigidity makes it ideal for use in dome tweeter design. Focal, at their factories in France, created a world first: a pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter capable of reproducing more than five octaves of sound, from 1,000 Hz to 40 kHz. The ideal tweeter is not only rigid but light. Aluminium and titanium are known for their rigidity and yet Beryllium is seven times more rigid than these materials in dome designs of identical mass. This rigidity allows for incredible linearity and acoustic transparency, properties that are responsible for the jaw-dropping high frequency performance of the Focal Utopia Evo range of luxury speakers.

Sound Advice

  • The Focal Maestro Utopia Evo requires 200 hours of break-in time before it will sound its best.

  • For best results, we recommend a minimum of 24-36” of distance from the back wall to the back of the speaker.

  • We recommend high performance speaker cable to get the most out of your system.

Focal Maestro Utopia Evo Technical Specifications

We provide this information from the manufacturer for those who want to know or who find it interesting. In our opinion, however, you shouldn’t pay too much heed to technical specs. How a speaker reacts to test tones in a lab is one thing. How it sounds playing music, a far more complex and nuanced signal than any test tone, is another. Knowledge is power and the best knowledge is not how a speaker ‘sounds’ to a microphone, but how it sounds to you.
